Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Fellow Association Members:

A news article in the New York Times featured a report that mentioned that Reading is the poorest city in the country.  Once again, this has brought us national attention.  What has not been covered, however, is how our city strives to thrive in spite of that dubious distinction.  And that quest for success all begins with education.
That is why I am so proud to represent those of you who spend countless hours doing everything you can to make sure our students find success.  Despite horrid learning conditions, dilapidated buildings, unfathomable transiency, rampant truancy, ceaseless political attacks, and occasional struggles with administrators, every single one of you relishes the great responsibility that comes with working with these children.
We all know that our kids are given a raw deal, and already start out their hopes for civic interaction and decent employment behind the eight ball.  We all know the stigma that comes with working in the Reading School District; imagine what our students must face from others for actually living in this city.
Well, I, for one, am tired of the stereotype, the discrimination, and the pity party that others would bestow upon us.  As I told a guest from the Philadelphia area who commented on how well-behaved our students were and how professional our teachers are, I would put my teachers up against any other teachers in the entire state.  What those in other surrounding districts do, almost any of us could do.  But very few outsiders could do - or deal with - what we do every single day of our careers.
It is BECAUSE of the teachers here, and not in spite of them, that the students in this district find new ways to succeed.  It is because of your passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence that our students discover new ways to build self-esteem, experience success, and shape new dreams.
As I told our retired teachers at a luncheon, I am humbled and honored to represent you.  Keep up the good work.  You take care of your kids, and your Association will take care of you, because what you do every day is noble and honorable. Never forget that what you do, in some small way, changes the world every day!
